Outgoing organisers of a Catlins summer holiday event say they may approach the local council as they continue to seek replacement operators.

The Pounawea Picnic Group placed a "thank you" notice in yesterday’s Otago Daily Times, saying they had yet to find anyone to take over the running of the Pounawea New Year’s Eve fireworks, which have taken place since 2012.

In December last year, group member Annette Moore said she and her friends had enjoyed running the event, but were "getting on in years" and could not continue.

Yesterday’s notice confirmed this decision, saying this past summer’s event was the "last picnic to be organised by this group".

Mrs Moore said this did not yet mean the die was cast, however.

"Things are on hold. We still have all the equipment anyone would need to run the event, and we’ve put the fireworks man and our regular band on stand-by, in case someone steps forward at the 11th hour.

"We’d need to know by August-September, but we’re also considering other options in the meantime."

One of those was approaching the Clutha District Council, she said.

"We haven’t approached them yet, but this would be one possibility, perhaps. It’s an established event that brings hundreds of people into the district each year and shows it off at its best.

"It might be something the Youth Council could take on, for example, as the formula is already there — it just needs enthusiastic people to run it."

Fellow organiser Diane Begg said the notice was a "thank you" to the many people and groups who had helped the event over the years, as well as a clear statement of intent.

"We’re quite clear that we’re stepping down. We’ve had a couple of nibbles, but nothing committed as of yet."

Mrs Begg said anyone could run the event fairly simply.

"We had a lovely night this summer, not least because we had a lot more volunteers helping run the event on the day. Now people know that’s part of what helps it to run smoothly, I don’t see why that wouldn’t continue, so we just need someone — or an organisation like the council — to take the helm."

She said she remained "moderately hopeful" the event would find a new overseer.
