The new lessees of the Beaumont Hotel say "it's an iconic pub", and they intend to keep it that way.

Husband and wife Gunnar Egilsson and Alison Mills have been in residence for a week.

Their first few days in the hotel were spent cleaning the building and going through the stock.

They intend to open the hotel as soon as they have secured their licence.

The pair have been married for 23 years and have three children, one aged 22 and 13-year-old twins.

The hotel has been vacant since last November, and Mr Egilsson said when they arrived, there was a distinctive smell to the place.

The beer lines from the bar were leaking into the cellar, and the couple had to get a plumber to fix them.

Ms Mills said the pair enjoyed the hospitality industry and had previous experience, having run an establishment in Iceland for 11 years before returning to New Zealand and taking on the Beaumont Hotel lease.

They are still in discussions with alcohol suppliers, but say they will try to supply the two main types of beer - DB and Speight's - and a selection of New Zealand wines.

The couple have ideas about how use of the hotel can be extended, which could include a backpackers, but want to keep their plans in line with local expectations.

"We are looking at taking some trees down and opening up the caravan park, but we have got to ask the locals why the trees were planted first," Ms Mills said.

"We are trying to find the history of the pub.

"It's very hard to find the history of this place.

I have to talk to the locals."

Ms Mills said the idea was to have the history of the hotel displayed on the walls, beside the old photos of local scenery and the hunting trophies.

"It's an iconic pub, and we want to keep it that way."
