The Otago Corrections Facility (OCF) has appointed Dave Miller as just the second prison director in its 11-year history.
Mr Miller had a lengthy career with Dunedin police, including serving in Afghanistan and the Solomon Islands, and responding to the mass shooting at Aramoana.
He has also worked at the Ministry of Justice and had a brief stint as the University of Otago proctor.
He was officially welcomed to his new role at the Milburn prison on Monday last week with a mihi whakatau from OCF staff, and by dignitaries including Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan and members of local iwi and community stakeholder groups.
Corrections acting southern regional commissioner Chris O'Brien-Smith said
the role of prison director was key to the smooth running of the prison and the delivery of quality programmes and services to offenders.
''The site supports a large number of local community and environmental projects.
''As a new chapter begins, we look forward to building on this firm foundation.''
Previous prison manager/director Jack Harrison is now based in Corrections' National Office in Wellington.
