Milford Road reopened yesterday

The Milford Rd was open for business again yesterday, but motorists thinking of travelling to the area in the next few days are advised to check the New Zealand Transport Agency website before travelling.

Southland agency regional manager Peter Robinson said the road was closed on Friday, due to a high avalanche risk following a storm which brought in snow.

The freezing level dropped on Saturday, allowing the road to be reopened, but it was closed again on Sunday when another storm came through and the freezing level increased.

Mr Robinson said there was a possibility of more storms in the coming days, which could affect the road.

It was closed for almost two weeks last month, its longest closure in six years, after both tunnel entrances were buried by over 100,000 tonnes of avalanche debris.
