Snow, sleet and heavy rain provided a wintry blast in the South yesterday, with several flurries of snow settling in Clinton and the Owaka Valley.

Snow blanketed higher fields on Scott McKenzie's farm in Clinton, prompting him to put out extra winter feed for his sheep and bulls.

"I'd rather have snow now than at lambing time," he said.

School children had a shorter day than usual, with Clinton Primary closing at lunchtime to ensure its pupils got home safely. The Clinton-Mataura road was closed on Tuesday night, reopening for an hour yesterday morning before being closed again at 10.45am.

Farmer Grant Bradfield said snow settled on the hills around Owaka, but soft and wet ground created more of a problem than the snow.

Owaka Valley Rd, between Hazeldale Rd and Hunt Rd, was only open to 4WD vehicles yesterday, but last night reopened to all vehicles with a warning to take care because of the snow.

Further snow was expected last night, with the Clutha District Council urging motorists to take extreme care and drive to the conditions, particularly in the Catlins and Clinton areas because of ice and snow.

Bridge inspections scheduled for yesterday and today were postponed.
