A fire near Milton that sent a massive smoke cloud skyward is "under control".
A Fire Service spokesman said firefighters were called to a vegetation fire in North Branch Rd just before 3.30pm.
A helicopter was used to access the remote "foothills" area and start the large vegetation fire, he said.
The cloud of smoke was seen by people from Mosgiel to Milton, and several people contacted the Otago Daily Times asking whether there had been an explosion.
The permitted fire created plenty of smoke but was "under control", the spokesman said.
