Wynette McLachlan, of Popotunoa, 40km northwest of Balclutha, has been playing the sport for more than 30 years.
She is the national women's singles champion and will represent New Zealand in the sixth Asia Pacific competition in singles, and mixed pairs in Merdeka, Malaysia next week.
McLachlan said she was looking forward to the competition, as it was her first trip to the country.
She was selected for the New Zealand team after winning the women's singles title at the national club bowls championships in April - which she won despite having a broken left arm.
To get to the national championships, she had to first win at the South Otago level, and then the regional competition, which included clubs from South Canterbury to Bluff.
Although the Asia-Pacific event also involves mixed triples, she would only compete in the singles and in the mixed doubles, with New Zealand men's champion Shannon McIlroy, of Nelson.
"I like both singles and pairs, but it's nice to have someone to chat to while bowling," McLachlan said.
She has previously won two New Zealand singles titles, and been runner-up three times.
She has spent the last few months in Australia, where she managed to get some training hours in, and has also travelled around Otago and Southland, practising on various bowling greens.
The competition in Malaysia would be played in an indoor stadium, on artificial grass, so she had also travelled to Dunedin and Gore, where there are artificial greens.
