Lawrence man in hospital after driving off road

A Lawrence man has been taken to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries after the vehicle he was travelling in went off the road near Lawrence today.

Senior Constable Robert Wallace, of Lawrence, said a 36-year-old male was driving on State Highway 8 between Waitahuna and Lawrence when the vehicle he was in drifted over the centre line and off the road.

St John communications adviser Ian Henderson said a single ambulance was sent to the scene and the man was transported to Dunedin hospital with moderate injuries.

Snr Const Wallace said fire services from Lawrence and Waitahuna were sent to the scene about 12.30pm.

He said the man is understood to have had a medical episode prior to the incident which may have caused the Hyundai station wagon to crash.

He said the incident occurred 5km outside of Lawrence at the "Forsyth bends'' as the man was driving towards the town.
