Former Otago rugby captain and Otago Country rugby coach David Latta is taking his bike for a spin this week as part of the Southland Cycle Ride.

The 236km trek from Queenstown to Invercargill will raise funds for rescue helicopters around New Zealand.

Mr Latta decided to take part to show support for his friend and brother-in-law Scott Milne who was transported by rescue helicopter from Fiordland after falling off a cliff in 2005.

''He probably owes his life to the rescue choppers and the crew,'' Mr Latta said.

Mr Milne had serious injuries at the time and was warned ''take life easy''.

''He's had some challenges but if you see him now ... he's back on the game.''

Mr Milne had since defied the odds by recovering from his injuries and was also entered in the cycling event with Mr Latta.

Mr Latta said the pair intended to cycle together if they could.

He said they were supporting the fundraising efforts.
