Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan and deputy mayor Ken Payne plant a ceremonial kowhai tree at Clutha District Council headquarters in Balclutha yesterday.

The ceremony, attended by councillors and council staff, was held to mark the coronation of King Charles III, which takes place tomorrow.

Mr Cadogan said it marked a significant moment in history.

"It’s an important occasion for New Zealand to mark as part of the Commonwealth, and for we as councillors, who pledge our allegiance to the King as part of our office"

Mr Cadogan acknowledged the coronation varied in significance for Clutha residents, and said he would not be watching the event himself.
