Police are seeking information following an alleged assault on a German tourist after she was picked up while hitchhiking from Gore.
Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Balclutha, said the 20-year-old was hitchhiking north from Gore when she was picked up by the driver of a silver 4WD.
Sgt Dinnissen said the driver allegedly made lewd remarks and assaulted the woman about 2.30pm on Tuesday, just south of Milton on State Highway 1.
The 20-year-old woman got out of the vehicle in Milton and contacted police.
Both the driver and the woman stopped at the Balclutha Warehouse about 1.30pm on Tuesday to use the toilets.
Sgt Dinnissen asked anyone who might have seen the vehicle and its occupants to contact the Balclutha police on (03) 418-0203.
The woman is of average height with sandy blonde hair and was wearing a blue and white striped shirt, white/grey ruffled skirt, blue tights and black shoes.
She described her attacker as a Caucasian male with dark hair, possibly 175cm tall, wearing a black polo shirt with white writing on the left, black and white pin-striped business trousers and black shoes.
The man is believed to be a travelling salesman from Auckland, selling metal or electrical products.
