Hunt for playground attacker

Balclutha police are trying to identify a man who allegedly assaulted a teenage boy at the weekend.

Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said a 13-year-old boy was playing near the playground in Lanark St in Balclutha on Saturday about 7pm when he encountered a group of older males.

An altercation resulted with the group believed to be in their late teens.

It was unclear how many were in the group but it was estimated to be about six or seven.

Sgt Bull said the 13-year-old escaped with a minor injury after he was allegedly struck on the back of his head.

Police were appealing to the public for any information on the identity of the male. He was described as being about 18 years old, of solid build and 1.73m tall.

The man had dark hair, facial hair on his chin and was wearing a maroon or purple jersey.

Sgt Bull asked anyone in the public who might know of the man's identity to contact police.

•A 23-year-old male from Balclutha will appear in court this week facing a domestic violence charge.

Sergeant Martin Bull said the man was arrested on Monday night in relation to an alleged domestic violence incident involving his partner. He is due to appear in the Dunedin Court on Friday.
