Children will be hoping Santa’s elf mechanics make it to Clutha Valley in time for Christmas Eve, after he was spotted conducting some emergency repairs to his 4WD near Clydevale on Tuesday.

Farm owner Ross Begg said Mr Claus had come to grief about a fortnight ago, suddenly turning up in a roadside beef-grazing paddock overnight.

"We’ve had a word, and done what we can to help out, but unfortunately his Captiva seems to have given up the ghost."

The stranded Santa had drawn substantial attention since he first appeared, Mr Begg said.

"The kids have had a lot of fun with him, and we’ve had a couple of our early morning truckies say they thought it was an accident at first, until they saw the costume."

He said he felt confident Santa would be rescued in time for the big day.

"I expect he’ll make his way back to Lapland very shortly."
