The first dedicated Market Day organised for Balclutha will be held tomorrow in Elizabeth St on the plaza, built as part of the main-street upgrade.
Event organiser Michelle Jury said she wanted to give Balclutha its own stand-alone market day.
"Come on down and help support this ... because I’m doing this for the community," she said.
About eight craft and goods dealers had already signed up to be part of the first market day.
Mrs Jury hoped it would become a weekly event.
She wanted to start small so she could see how it worked and "tweak things" as it grew.
The plaza had always been the ideal spot to host a market and this year she decided to go forward with her plans for a market. Mrs Jury got the idea when she worked on the committee for the opening for the main street upgrade at the end of 2015. While market days had been organised in conjunction with other major events, such as the Santa Parade, this would be the first one on its own.
She liaised with the Clutha District Council to organise the event.
Mrs Jury hoped tourists and shoppers would visit the market and continue down the main Clyde St to use the local dining and businesses.
"With tourists passing through in the summertime, why not start up markets?"
Money raised from the markets would go to the council to cover the overheads. Any money left over would be retained by the council and later donated to a chosen community cause, Mrs Jury said.
