Mr Paul (43) was awarded his Gold Star at the weekend, recognising 25 years' service.
Both his late grandfather Gordon and father Graeme (70) were volunteer firefighters in the Milton brigade, and between them they have served for more than 75 years.
''Growing up, the brigade was always a part of our family. Grandad did nearly 20 years, and Dad did 31,'' Mr Paul said.
A mechanic and the owner of Graeme Paul Motors in Milton, he is also a senior station officer in the Milton Volunteer Fire Brigade.
''There's great comradeship. I think that's what keeps everyone in the brigade.''
Mr Paul signed up in April 1988 and lived in the station for the first six years.
''When I first joined, we had a spate of bad [vehicle] accidents ... We also did a lot of chimney fires.''
Graeme Paul said he was very proud of his son, adding all three generations were also members of the brigade's waterways competition team.
While Scott was a member, the Milton team won the Otago Southland championship five times.
Mr Paul said having both his father and grandfather around for the Milton brigade's centenary in 2002 was a special moment.
Milton Chief Fire Officer Alan Tapp said Mr Paul was very dependable, and was particularly important in manning the service during the day as he worked a few blocks from the station.
Mr Tapp said that the brigade was very ''family-oriented'', several families having had long-standing ties. Mr Paul at the weekend also joined his father as a life member of the brigade.
