It may take months before the Civil Aviation Authority has answers as to why a microlight crashed in South Otago, killing its two occupants.

Thomas John Evans (30) and Jenna Frances Craig (26), both of South Otago, died when the Rans S6 they were in crashed on a farm in Glenomaru Valley, between Owaka and Kaka Point, on Sunday.

Civil Aviation Authority investigators had spent recent days piecing together the crash.

However, it might be months before investigators were able to draw any conclusions.

''There is much more than field work to be done,'' authority investigator-in-charge Steve Rogers said.

''We completed gathering the information from the accident site [on Tuesday].

''We were able to essentially dismantle [the plane] on site and get to see and check everything we needed.''

Some interviews were completed on Tuesday and more were carried out yesterday.

Investigators arrived at the scene on Monday, taking it over from police.

Mr Evans and Ms Craig were only occupants of the microlight, which left in good conditions from Balclutha aerodrome, where it was based.

A combined service to farewell the couple will be held on April 10 at 11.30am at the Balclutha War Memorial Hall.
