Some had suggested the silo, at the former Rosebank Sawmill in Balclutha, could be used to promote Oamaru as the steampunk capital of the world, sawmill site manager Sarah Van Asperen said.
It could be used as garden feature, albeit a giant one.
It could even be converted into a house.
"You see on TV shows that they convert them into cubby houses."
The silo is being given away by Ms Van Asperen’s employer, the Clutha District Council, which plans to clear the site for an industrial park.
She said it would have been worth nearly $200,000 when it was first installed.
The silo is available free to a good home.
The only cost would be removing it from the sawmill and the only catch was that it was too big to be moved across the Balclutha bridge.
Anyone interested can contact the council.
