Catlins resident Helen-May Burgess discovered on her way home on Tuesday night that the two concreted-in fences around the Purakaunui Falls car park had been knocked over.

"We were taken aback. It was totally vandalised."

Senior Constable Murray Hewitson, of Owaka, believed the fence  was knocked over by a utility vehicle with a bull-bar.

"I think it’s been done deliberately."

A piece of plastic trim from the inside of a wheel-arch on a vehicle was left behind at the scene.

The week  before, signs were knocked over in Katea Rd.

"Again someone has just run into them with bull-bars and knocked them over."

If anyone has any information in relation to the damage, they are asked to call police in Balclutha on (03) 418 0203 or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
