The Lawrence Summer Art Competition has been reinstated by organisers of the town's former arts festival, following a recent resurgence of artistic activity in the town, spokeswoman Maureen Cummings said.
''After the arts festival ended in 2013, it left a bit of a gap. That event probably grew too big - we had a tiger by the tail - so you could say this is a toe in the water to see what we can do instead.''
Lawrence-based classical painter and YouTube art tutor Andrew Tischler, who is helping with the exhibition, said the ''Heritage''-themed competition was for everyone who loved art.
''An event like this brings people together and celebrates what Lawrence has in abundance - heritage. I'd encourage people to just give it a go.''
He said winners would be chosen by popular vote, giving all entrants an equal chance.
The exhibition would open on November 2, and overlap with the town's annual Heritage Festival the following day.
Visitors could also view the artwork the following weekend, Mrs Cummings said.
Festival reserves meant a first prize of $2500 was available. Former Lawrence business Tuapeka Gold Print would provide a second prize of $500.
Working guest artists can be viewed on each exhibition day.
Further art-related events will be held on November 3.
