Event to raise funds for health centre

An event to raise funds for the proposed West Otago Health Centre will be held during Waitangi Day weekend.

West Otago Health Centre Trust fundraising committee member Michelle Kennedy said the "Designz in the Gardenz" garden tour would take place in some large rural gardens around the Tapanui area.

A variety of artworks from eight artists would be on display.

This is the third year the garden event has been held.

Organisers try to focus on private gardens throughout West Otago area.

The event is held over two days - Sunday, February 5 and Monday, February 6.

The funds raised will go towards the West Otago Health Centre.

The $5.9 million centre is to be built on the grounds of the former Tapanui hospital, and will include a 14-bed rest-home.

This is primarily aimed at keeping the district's elderly residents in the town instead of obliging them to move to facilities in larger centres.

Mrs Kennedy said the committee was also raising livestock as a fundraiser for the centre.

The centre will provide health services to about 2000 people in the West Otago area.

The Tapanui hospital was closed in 1994, and was bought by the community in 2004.

West Otago Health Limited, a charitable company, was formed in 2002 to run the day-to-day business from its base at the West Otago Medical Centre in Tapanui.

The company provides a range of community health services, including district nursing, home help, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and meals on wheels.

There are also 24-hour general-practice services seven days a week.

The sole owner of West Otago Health Ltd is West Otago Health Trust, whose trustees are appointed by members of the West Otago Community Board.

Last year, the Clutha District Council decided to hold $56,996 from the harvesting of a forestry block in West Otago in a reserve account for the centre.

This would be handed over when the council's contribution of $1 million was called on.
