The 146th annual Tokomairiro A and P Show at Milton on Saturday drew a crowd of about 1000.

Temperatures topped 20degC as a variety of animal events, machinery displays, food and sideshows kept visitors entertained.

Horsewoman Julieanne Baynes, of Winton, continued her good run in recent weeks, when her mare Villa Maria was named supreme champion of the equestrian section. She won the same title at the West Otago and South Otago A and P shows.

Dog triallist Barry Hobbs amused crowds with an unorthodox duck trial. He used his two Border collies, Cam and Murph, to herd white Pekin ducks through an obstacle course of plastic fence stakes, a wooden maze, tunnel, and a bridge.

A respected and successful dog triallist, Mr Hobbs manages Thornicroft Station, near Lake Mahinerangi, for Landcorp.

Mr Hobbs heard of another dog triallist working with ducks and decided to give it a go himself. He said the dogs did not require too much extra training, although the ducks were "a bit more difficult" on Saturday after being shifted in the morning.

This show season was his second year training ducks and he planned to hold demonstrations at the Gore, Lake Hayes, Oamaru, and Taieri shows.
