Elderly say prowler keeping them awake

Elderly people say a man is keeping them awake by tapping on their windows at night, and one woman says police are not doing anything to stop it.

Vivienne McMillan, who lives in a block of flats owned by the Clutha District Council in Charlotte St, Balclutha, said she felt targeted by the prowler, who tapped on her window at night and made loud rustling noises, "like paper being scrunched".

She said a man had been visiting her flat since February and she had seen him once, when she was up in the early hours of the morning after being woken by tapping.

"I'm not scared, I'm just frustrated. All I want to do is have a good night's sleep. It's just the principle of the thing. He gets to go home and have a good sleep during the day and he's up visiting our houses at night, keeping us awake."

Mrs McMillan said she understood police were limited by what the law allowed but hoped something would be done to prevent further visits.

"He doesn't do anything to my garden. He touches nothing and just seems to want attention."

The 74-year-old said she had taken to shifting her bed away from the window, and had since moved into the living room where she had a "good night's sleep".

She believed the prowler last visited on Tuesday night, when she heard tapping on her window. Mrs McMillan said he might have visited since then but she had not heard anything more since shifting her bed. Two other residents had also heard tapping on windows and knocks on doors, she said.

Other residents did not wish to speak to the Otago Daily Times but one admitted she had trouble sleeping because of tapping on her window.

Constable Tom Taylor, of Balclutha, said police were investigating the issue but were "cautious". There might not be a prowler.

"We have had one sighting and some residents have reported someone banging on their doors but nothing further. We have had to deal with prowlers from time to time."

The reported incidents all took place between midnight and 3am. One police officer had twice stayed up all night but not seen anything suspicious, he said.

Const Taylor said police had talked to residents again last week and one had told him they had not heard anything at night for two weeks.

He asked anyone with confirmed sightings of suspicious behaviour in the area or "firm leads" to contact the Balclutha police.
