South Canterbury’s oldest and most successful rugby club is gearing up to celebrate its 150th jubilee next Easter.

The Temuka Rugby Club was formed on April 28, 1875, and the call has gone out for anyone who has had an association with the club to register for the celebrations, which will be held from April 18-20.

The jubilee will kick off with a social evening on Good Friday.

The Saturday will begin with "Mini Magpies" games in the morning, then a photo shoot, followed by scheduled senior and senior B competition matches between Temuka’s "Mighty Magpies" and neighbours Geraldine.

On Saturday evening there is a dinner, with proceedings led by MC Brendan Laney.

There will later be a band, and a feature of the evening will be an auction of one-off specially-designed jubilee jerseys numbered 1 to 22.

Easter Sunday will feature Golden Oldies rugby.

The celebrations are being sponsored by Temuka company Duncan Joinery, owned by Craig and Hannah Duncan, and organising committee chairman Steve Fisher said the club was extremely grateful for the couple’s support.

He said more than 100 people had already registered for the jubilee and he appealed to others who have had an association with the club to register and also spread the message about the celebrations.

Registrations, which are set to close on January 20, can be made at www.sporty.co.nz/temuka rugby and inquiries can be made to trfc150@gmail.com

The club’s 150-year history had its beginnings in a meeting chaired by the town’s doctor.

Just 12 people attended but within weeks the Temuka team was in action, playing against the South Canterbury Football Club (it was later named Timaru and then in 1914 folded).

Temuka lost that match but subsequently has won the senior club competition 43 times (the next best is 19) and the senior B title 33 times.

More than 200 of the club’s players have appeared in South Canterbury senior representative teams.

The club has had four All Blacks: Gus Spillane, Archie Strang, Lachie Grant and Tom Coughlan. Tuini Manning, Mick O’Connor and Jim Brooking played for the Maori All Blacks.
