Police say a Wellington man was lucky to escape serious injury when his utility vehicle plunged about 30m down a bank near Lawrence yesterday afternoon.

Senior Constable Robert Wallace, of Lawrence, said a Toyota Hilux driven by the 26-year-old was towing a trailer carrying a quad bike on Waipori Rd shortly after noon.

The vehicle failed to take a left-hand bend, crossed the centre line, and rolled about 30m down a bank, he said.

Snr Const Wallace said the man was ''very lucky'' to walk away from the crash.

''The vehicle was sitting extremely precariously. He's a lucky man,'' Snr Const Wallace said.

The Lawrence Volunteer Fire Brigade also attended the incident, which delayed traffic on the road for about five hours.

The engine bay briefly ignited, but the fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

By 5.30pm yesterday the ute, trailer, and quad bike had been recovered, and firefighters had cleaned off the road.
