Driver killed near Owaka

A young man has died after his car crashed into a bank near the township of Owaka, in South Otago, last night.

Police said he was the only person involved the crash on Owaka Valley Rd tonight and no other vehicles were involved.

Firefighters were called to the scene about 6.45pm.

Senior Sergeant Darryl Lennane, of Dunedin, said a rescue helicopter was also sent, but he could not say how the accident happened.

The man's name would not be released until next of kin had been told. 

The road was down to one lane tonight until the scene had been cleared.

Serious crash investigators would be carryinig out an examination of the scene.
