Dog park on council radar

The establishment of a dog park in Balclutha or Milton appears set to be investigated by the Clutha District Council later this year.

The council decided in June to look into whether a dog park should be built in one of the towns after submitters on a dog control bylaw review said one was needed.

Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan said yesterday he thought the idea of a dog park in the district was ''absolutely'' a positive suggestion.

He said the council needed to fully investigate how best to utilise resources before any suggestions were implemented.

If a dog park was created, the council needed to be certain it was in the best place and the right resources were used. The community also would have to get involved and be open about what each town needed.

''There could be other groups and projects which could fit in with the dog park and we've [the council] got to start looking at it ... so our community can get the best bang for their buck,'' Mr Cadogan said.

A council spokesperson said no formal investigations had begun into a dog park and it would be considered as part of the community plan process, formal consultations for which are due to start in November.
