Crash victim's country of origin not revealed

The 30-year-old woman killed in a car crash in South Westland yesterday morning was not a New Zealand passport holder.

Tasman police communications manager Barbara Dunn told the Otago Daily Times late yesterday police were contacting relatives and she was unable to say where the woman was from because of ''issues'' with her country of origin.

The woman died shortly after 10am following a crash on State Highway 6 north of Haast, between Moeraki Bluffs and Paringa.

The Greymouth Star reported the crash was near Mimi Creek, at the eastern end of Lake Moeraki.

Police said a male occupant of the vehicle was not seriously injured in the crash.

It is believed only one vehicle was involved.

A police serious crash unit travelled to the scene from the Tasman district and Ms Dunn said it would be some days before the cause was established.

She was unaware whether road conditions contributed to the crash but warned motorists to use ''extreme care'' in the area, due to wintry conditions.
