A man killed in a truck crash near Beaumont on Tuesday morning was a respected member of the Clutha community.

Balclutha man Nigel Beck (54) was involved in the Clutha District RSA for about nine years, including as president.

Yesterday, current president Glenda McNutt said Mr Beck had been a central member of the organisation.

''He was one of the members who secured the future of
the RSA.''

As well as president, he had been a vice-president in the past and was an executive member when he died.

Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan said Mr Beck was a ''local identity'' who lived all his life in the area.

''Nigel was a good guy. Our thoughts are with his family at this tragic time.''

The man who died when his car hit a logging truck near the lower North Island town of Sanson was 80-year-old Nedjeljko Glamuzina, of Wellington, NZN reported.

One person has died and another is in a moderate condition after a crash involving a truck and a car on State Highway 1 between Timaru and Pareora.

Police responded to the incident between Half Chain Rd and King St, Pareora, at 2.25pm yesterday.
