Crash rescue team off to Australia

Seven members of the Milton Volunteer Fire Brigade will head across the Ditch in July to compete in the 2015 Australasian Rescue Challenge.

The team's second-place finish in the South Island Road Crash Rescue Challenge in Cromwell on June 6 put it into a draw with the second-placed North Island squad, from Silverdale, near Auckland.

Milton prevailed in the random draw and will join teams from Hawera and Rolleston to compete in Alice Springs.

Milton Road Crash Rescue team leader Brian Cowie said he and the team were ''very, very much'' looking forward to the competition this winter.

He said it would be an honour to represent the United Fire Brigades' Association and Milton.

''We've been training twice a week for a long time,'' Mr Cowie said.

''We're looking forward to it.''

Mr Cowie has been training with the Milton road crash rescue team since 1999.

Travelling to Australia with him will be Aaron Stephen, Nigel Lloyd, Haydon Crabb, Matt Jones, Pene Ngatai, and Michael Eaton, as a reserve.
