Council lets two road contracts

Southroads will be in charge of road maintenance in the Clutha district for the first time in six years.

A Clutha District Council spokeswoman said in a statement the contract would cover work such as routine maintenance, grading, metalling, pavement repairs, cleaning, culvert work and vegetation control.

SouthRoads Otago regional manager Dean Elder said SouthRoads was looking forward to working with the council and the community.

Three tenders were received for the road maintenance contract, SouthRoads winning with a tender price of $17.5million over three years, about 1.8% above the council's estimate.

In addition to the roading maintenance contract, the council also awarded its ''roading professional services'' contract to Stantec for $1.9million over three years. That was 31% below the council's estimate.

Stantec managing director Mark Bruzzone said the company had carried out this work for several years.

It provided consultancy services, primarily for roading work, such as bridge inspections and the preparation and supervision of contracts.

It could also include water services projects.

Council service delivery group manager Jules Witt was satisfied to have both contracts awarded, one being close to the council's estimate and the other ''significantly under''.

The Clutha district road network covers a distance of about 3003km.

Of that, 833km is sealed.
