Illegal dumping will not be tolerated, according to the Clutha District Council, which says it feels vindicated after the recent prosecution of a man who dumped rubbish near Clinton in September.
The man was convicted and fined $1000, with reparation of $101, for dumping a trailer-load of rubbish at a layby near Clinton.
Council planning and environment manager Murray Brass said the fine was significant.
"It is both an appropriate punishment for the offender and sends a clear message to the general public that such littering is unacceptable."
The Litter Act makes it illegal for anyone to deposit rubbish of any kind on to land without approval of the landowner.
A person in a recent incident in Milton avoided the courts after agreeing to pay clean-up costs.
Mr Brass said both matters highlighted how useful it would be to have an infringement system for littering - something the council is proposing as part of a bylaw review.
