Haunting yet strikingly colourful acrylic on canvas "Headaches," by 21-year-old local Elliot Sedgeman, won the $1000 first prize for the inaugural Lawrence Creative Arts — Clutha Youth Art Competition, last Saturday.

"We want to encourage young artists — and all artists want to be taken seriously," key organiser Rachel Taylor said.

"So we decided to find out whether a serious contest with a formal exhibition, serious prizes and the option to offer work for sale would achieve that.

"We had 22 works by 19 young artists and were very impressed by the quality, their commitment and the support from the rest of the community.

"It’s a great success with plenty of learning and we look forward to holding the event every year and watching it grow."
