Charges after car hits tree

Instead of Gone in 60 Seconds, a Balclutha woman found her alleged car stealing exploits were over in 60 seconds.

The 21 year old will face charges of breaching bail, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and careless driving when she appears in the Dunedin District Court today.

The woman took a car from John St, in Balclutha, about 1.30am yesterday and crashed it about a kilometre away, in Clyde St, police said.

Police had also been looking for the woman's passenger. The 22 year old man was held in custody for breaching bail, but was not charged in relation to the crash or taking of the motor vehicle, Senior Sergeant Darryl Lennane said.

The woman lost control of the vehicle, which hit a tree before coming to rest against a fence at the intersection of Clyde St and Hospital Rd.

The cause of the crash, or whether speed or alcohol were factors, was unknown, Snr Sgt Lennane said.

The pair were uninjured and paramedics were not required.

The woman was held in custody to appear before the court today.
