Senior Constable Murray Hewitson, of Owaka, said a Taiwanese couple were travelling towards Kaka Point from Nugget Point when the female driver lost control on the gravel road shortly before 3pm.
He said the woman braked too heavily on the gravel, causing the car to crash on to the beach.
The driver was uninjured but her male passenger received a bump to the head.
Snr Const Hewitson attributed the lack of serious injury to the fact both occupants were wearing seat belts: ''Seat belts saved the day''.
Police were able to remove the car from the beach before the tide came in.
