Campervan stranded on roadside

Two Spanish tourists had a lucky escape after their campervan left the road in the Catlins yesterday afternoon.

Constable Rochelle Gordon, of Balclutha, said the couple were heading down from Nugget Point about 3pm yesterday when they met another vehicle going up the hill.

Const Gordon said the 32-year-old Spanish man driving the campervan, unfamiliar with this type of road, pulled too far to the left, causing the campervan to hang partway off the road.

Initial reports suggested the campervan had gone over a cliff, and three fire engines from Balclutha and Owaka volunteer fire brigades were dispatched, before being turned back, after police arrived and found the campervan had remained on the edge of the road.
