Army exercise at Hukarere Station

More than 50 soldiers will converge on the small township in West Otago on Friday.

Military personnel from the Otago Southland Regiment and Third Land Force Group will conduct a field training activity on Hukarere Station, near the Leithen Bush Reserve at Heriot, from Friday to Sunday.

Staff Sergeant Bobby Proctor said up to 60 soldiers would take part in the exercise involving the live firing of small arms ammunition and pyrotechnics.

The exercise would use Unimogs and light operational vehicles and would access the station via the Switzers and Charteris Bush roads.

Ssgt Proctor said danger boards would be placed on all tracks into the firing area.

The exercise would also involve moving troops and vehicles by day and night.

"We're trying to make sure our soldiers are ready for our next big exercise in the Waitaki and Mackenzie areas."
