This year just keeps getting better for golden girl Vickie Evans.

The Balclutha singer-songwriter performed at the National Country Music Awards in Hamilton last weekend, picking up the Horizon Award and the right to represent New Zealand in the Telstra Road to Tamworth event in Australia next January.

She will also perform at the Global Artists Party, part of the CMA Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee, the largest country-music festival in the world.

Meeting some of New Zealand's best country musicians was one of the highlights of last weekend's Hamilton event, Miss Evans said.

"It was an honour to win the Horizon Award and I'm looking forward to the trip to Nashville in June, but I keep winning guitars," she said with a laugh.

The 23-year-old said meeting people such as Aucklander Tami Neilson - named New Zealand female artist of the year - and performing at the national awards was "amazing".

"I saw Tami Neilson sitting in the front row smiling at me, and I'm thinking, 'Don't stuff up the words, don't stuff up the words."'

The recent win builds on Miss Evans' success at the New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards in Gore in April.

"This year has been fantastic. I won the Gold Guitars this year after getting nowhere last year despite entering two finals."

She has been singing country music since she was 11, when a singing teacher entered some local school children in the Kaitangata talent quest.

In July, Miss Evans opened for Glenn Shorrock, of Australia's Little River Band, and Jason Kerrison, lead singer of New Zealand band Opshop, when they performed in Balclutha.

Earlier this month, Miss Evans took on the starring role of Dorothy in the South Otago Theatrical Society's production of The Wizard of Oz. More than 1200 people attended the show and although she found the role daunting at first, Miss Evans said she enjoyed the challenge.

"It was awesome acting as well as singing in The Wizard of Oz. Opening night was scary but overall it [the show] was just so much fun."

Miss Evans now plans to concentrate on gigs and her upcoming debut album, which will feature 11 songs, before its launch in Balclutha in the next few months.
