Phar Lap Raceway at Washdyke has managed to escape the ravages of drought conditions affecting race tracks in other regions and will host a winter meeting this Sunday on a track described by South Canterbury Racing Club officials as good.
President Derek Mayne said yesterday the Sunday meeting had attracted a stronger than usual field of North Island horses and the first race would start at 11.45am as scheduled.
"We are delighted to have a strong North Island contingent of trainers and they are bringing good quality horses south to make the most of good winter surfaces."
He said the Winter Cup trial had attracted a particularly strong field and it would provide some great racing for spectators.
"The club appreciates the support of punters and this year, particularly, the strong support shown by northern connections.
"The meeting on Sunday will provide the district with all the usual benefits to the community such as accommodation and business spin-offs and we are hoping for good support from the locals to watch what will be an exciting day of racing."
