Maori Language Week last week had a spin-off into fashion and decorative art when fashion studies students from Aoraki Polytechnic learned the art of raranga.

The traditional Maori technique involves weaving various textiles to create complicated patterns. The finished products are then displayed on their own as works of art or used to embellish garments.

Fashion tutor Janice Friend said students used classic fabrics and wove them into patterns that could be used in their garment design.

‘‘It opened up a whole new area of possibilities for the students.

‘‘It's allowed us to participate in Maori Language Week and learn a valuable new skill that could easily be incorporated into everyday fashion,'' she said.
