Builders from Swann Building have been repairing the roof, to make it waterproof, and the glass in the arch on the north end of the building is also being repaired.
Oamaru Colourplus glaziers have been trying to conserve much the original glass, which was "fantastic", Pro-Ject Waimate co-ordinator Sheryl Frew said.
The restoration of the two-storey brick building, stretching between Grigson and High Sts, could cost between $1 million and $1.5 million.
