The Relay For Life in Waimate raised almost double what the organiser had hoped for.

Saturday’s event was the first to be hosted there, and raised more than $75,000 for the Cancer Society.

About 350 participants from 30 teams were joined by friends and supporters to complete laps of the Waimate Showgrounds.

"It’s exceeded my expectations. I’m absolutely stoked and thrilled," South Canterbury Cancer Society manager Leola Wilson said.

"I had hoped for 20 teams and $40,000, so we have done really well

... Waimate has really got in behind it."

The Relay for Life had traditionally been held in Timaru annually, but the society had decided to move it around smaller towns in the district every second year.

"It works well in a small community because it’s so family friendly and that’s what we love," Mrs Wilson said.

The cause was important for Harts Walking for a Cause team leader Theresa Hart, of St Andrews.

She was undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer last year.

"This has given me something to focus on, rather than sitting at home

... The Cancer Society has been amazing, it feels like you are walking with your family.

"I met some other people during chemo and they are here — it’s very emotional."
