Timaru Boys' High arts coordinator and show choreographer Kirsty Peffers said the musical was fastmoving and full of surprises.
The cast had been rehearsing for nearly three months and had responded well to the challenge of multiple roles and frequent costume changes, she said.
The musical light-heartedly dramatises the exploits of Al Capone, the infamous Chicago gangster of the 1920s, who narrates the story of his life from his birth in 1890s Italy to his demise in Chicago in 1939.
It will be staged at Timaru Boys' High School's Hogben Hall on August 5, 6 and 7 at 7.30pm, with a matinee at 1pm on August 5.
The production involves 35 pupils, with the 24-strong cast headed by two year 12 pupils - Rupert Jackson in the title role and Nicola Hetherington playing his girlfriend (and later, wife) Mae Coughlin.
Instrumental music will be provided by a band made up of Timaru Boys' High pupils and staff.
Boys's High teachers Chris Cheesman and Ros Taylor are in the director and musical director seats respectively.
- Tickets are available from the Timaru Boys' High School student office and cost $10 for adults, $5 for children, students and senior citizens, and $25 for a family (two adults, two children). Because of the subject matter, some scenes do contain violence.
