A man died in a glider crash on Mt St Cuthbert, near Omarama, yesterday afternoon.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said a rescue helicopter crew from Dunedin found the wreckage of a glider about 2.45pm and informed police the pilot was dead at the scene.
Other glider pilots in the air at the time had witnessed the incident and alerted emergency services, Sgt Woodbridge said.
Police were working with Gliding New Zealand, the Omarama gliding community and Search and Rescue, and more details would be released when they were available, Sgt Woodbridge said.
Omarama Station owner Richard Subtil confirmed the glider had crashed on his 12,000ha property, but he was unable to provide any further details.
Police travelled to the crash site in a four-wheel-drive vehicle and it was hoped the body could be recovered over night.
The crash has been reported to the Civil Aviation Authority.
It is the second fatal plane crash near Omarama in less than three months.
Bo Nilsson died when the microlight he was flying crashed in a paddock near Twizel-Omarama Rd on October 25.
Mr Nilsson was a respected pilot who taught gliding for more than two decades.
