Santa has swapped out his sleigh for a motorcycle this year.

For the 38th time, Bikers Rights Organisation of New Zealand (Bronz) is revving up to hold their annual Timaru Toy Run.

Drop-off points have been set up all around South Canterbury for people to donate toys for those who need a little bit of help this Christmas.

Bronz Timaru president Les Sinclair said the toy run was as important as ever.

"People are struggling and it's not the kids' fault we're in that situation.

"It’s all about helping those in need, we’re continuing to do it because so many people are affected.

"It’s a real show of the times."

He said the run was well supported this year.

"We usually get about 30 bikes but we’re hoping that number will be up this year.

"James Meager [Rangitata MP] will be there for the start, we’re really hoping to show him how much support there is for riders doing charity.

"It's a whole committee effort to organise it, and then you've got the people turning up the day, and the riders are very generous with cash and donations, so they actually give their time plus their donation."

Mr Sinclair said that while any donation was welcome it was preferred if soft toys were avoided.

"[The Salvation Army] can't guarantee the cleanliness for soft toys,

"Personally, I try and purchase educational toys, something that will last the distance and something that the person can get a lot of time out of."

The toys collected are donated to the Timaru Salvation Army Citadel to be distributed.

Salvation Army Major Stephen Crump said the organisation was very appreciative

"This is a significant part of our input of toys, we only give out what we get in.

"We're wondering how this year's going to go with the closure of the meatworks and the effect that can have on people’s ability to spend."

The toy drive will leave from Ascot Sports House & Eatery carpark in Washdyke at 10am on Sunday; people will have until then to drop off their toy donations.

The riders will travel about 180km around South Canterbury, passing through Pleasant Point, Geraldine and Fairlie, eventually arriving back at the Timaru Salvation Army Citadel at 2.30pm.

Drop-off points for toys are located at New World Timaru, BNT Automotive Timaru, Pleasant Point Dairy, New World Temuka, Parkside Food Geraldine, Info Centre Fairlie, Salvation Army Citadel Timaru and Salvation Army Waimate.
