Temperatures plum- meted yesterday as a southerly moved over Otago and the region was again warned snow could fall to low levels.
While the warnings for high winds in the two regions were cancelled yesterday, conditions were to become progressively colder over the lower South Island, MetService's severe weather watch, issued yesterday, said.
There was a chance snow might fall to 300m or 400m in Fiordland, Southland and Otago last night and early today.
Significant heavy snowfall was not expected.
MetService was also predicting snow to hill level in Dunedin and sleetly showers inland tomorrow as another strong, cold southerly hit.
The weather was expected to clear inland from Wednesday, but along the coast more snow, showers and strong, cold southwesterlies were expected on Thursday.
