Snow forecast across Otago

Heavy snow is predicted to hit inland Otago tomorrow and snow showers are expected on the coast as part of what MetService is describing as a "significant event".

It was expected to begin with moderate rainfall this afternoon and into tomorrow morning throughout the region, forecaster Gerard Barrow said.

A severe weather watch was issued yesterday and there was a "good possibility" it would be upgraded to a warning closer to the event, he said.

A northerly flow was expected to strengthen today as a low in the Tasman Sea deepened overnight and the associated fronts would spread the rain.

Heavy snow above 400m was expected in inland Otago and coastal Otago was expected to get snow showers to the same level.

"This is a significant event, and members of the public are urged to stay up to date with the latest weather information."
