An Otago-wide recycling scheme for tourists is being run again this summer, and this time it comes with a map of recycling centres.

The On the Road Recycling scheme was trialled last year in Hampden and Palmerston, where locals and tourists were offered a bag and sticker system so visitors could recycle and keep the local environment clean.

The free map showing recycling locations throughout Otago was launched yesterday in Wanaka.

Prepaid recycling bags costing $2.50 are also available again for dropping off at recycling centres.

The map and bags are available at i-Sites and recycling centres throughout Otago.

Tourism New Zealand chief executive George Hickton said the initiative would be welcomed by international travellers, who expected recycling facilities to be available.

"Our research shows that of those visitors who think New Zealand has environmental problems, nearly a third of them say we don't have enough recycling facilities.

"The 100% Pure New Zealand campaign has helped build a positive reputation for New Zealand . . .

"Initiatives like this one are crucial to helping make sure we live up to the promises made in the campaign," Mr Hickton said.

On the Road Recycling manager Sophie Ward, of Wanaka, said she was delighted the scheme was ready for the influx of summer holiday visitors.

Ms Ward said Otago was the second region to get a tourist recycling regime in place.

The Otago Regional Council, Queenstown Lakes District Council, Lake Wanaka Tourism and Wanaka Wastebusters have supported the project.

Northland has a similar scheme.
