Waihemo Wastebusters, the smallest recycling organisation in New Zealand, is gaining visibility and support in the Palmerston and Waihemo area.
Two composting workshops were held by the group at the Palmerston Primary school during May were attended by 25 children and several adults.
Poster competitions for adults and children were held, won by Paige Walker (7) and Barbara Jopson, of Palmerston.
An open day at Waihemo Wastebusters on Sunday saw more than 20 adults inspect the processes used for recycling material gathered around Palmerston and the Waihemo area.
A reuse shop has proved popular, Waihemo Wastebusters president Dr Pat Shannon said. Reuse shop takings had increased sharply over the past year, he said.
The great local support showed growing awareness of the financial and environmental benefits of recycling, Waihemo Wastebusters relieving manager Toni Meredith said.
