It was smiles all around the Wakatipu Basin as both the Arrowtown Bulls and Wakatipu Premiers got the second phase of the Central Otago premier division rugby season off to a winning start.

Wakatipu had struggled early in the seeding stages of the competition but came right last week against Cromwell and followed that up with a top performance against the same opposition under lights on Thursday night at the Events Centre.

The novelty of night rugby drew a good crowd, many from Cromwell, but the visitors may have wished they had stayed at home because Wakatipu was a team on a mission.

After wearing Cromwell down in the first half and taking a comfortable 14-3 lead into the second spell, Wakatipu had a top-notch team performance running in four more tries while conceding none to win 40-3.

It is hard to single out an individual star in what was a complete team effort.

The forwards were aggressive and quick to the breakdown, turning over opposition ball at will.

But as always Toi Roberts was outstanding and, given a roving commission, popped up in all the right places before being subbed early in the second half.

The backs were fast, sharp and solid on defence.

Veteran first five Steven Ridley was deadly accurate with his shots at goal, many from wide out, before being subbed for impressive youngster Danny King.

Arrowtown took a while to click into gear against Upper Clutha on Saturday, getting on the wrong side of a hefty penalty count in the first half. But it still held a small 5-3 advantage going into the second 40 minutes, only to find itself trailing 5-6 soon after the restart.

The prospect of losing the White Horse Cup was never an option as the locals responded with a sustained attack on the line.

Second five-eighth Aidan Winter capitalised on front-foot ball from his forwards to score out wide, and from there it was all one-way traffic with Arrowtown driving like the teams of 2008, 2009 and 2010, picking and going, drawing and passing, stretching the opposition defence to eventually win the match 27-11.

This Saturday Arrowtown travels to Maniototo for a repeat of last year's final, while Wakatipu looks to build on a couple of good performances against Clyde in Clyde.
