Shot putter Tom Walsh got a big welcome when he visited Queenstown Primary School yesterday to give pupils tips on how to achieve their sporting dreams.

Principal Fiona Cavanagh said Walsh left a big impression on the children.

''They thought he was fantastic - they really looked up to him as a role model.

''He had the whole hall rocking and pumping, including the teachers.''

Walsh, the reigning World Indoor, Diamond League and Commonwealth Games champion, is in the resort to play in the Pro-Am of the 100th New Zealand Open golf tournament from today.

Last week Walsh won the supreme Halberg Award for the second year in a row.
